Roman Empire, Arcadius (383-408), tremissis struck at Rome.

Obverse: diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Arcadius right, legend DN ARCADIVS PF AVG. Reverse: Victory advancing right, holding a wreath, legend VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, letters R and M in the field, COMOB in exergue.

Small module, perfectly centred and close to as-struck condition, light patina over the original mint lustre. Rare for Rome. Mint State.

Note: Arcadius, son of Theodosius I, became Roman emperor of the East in 395, when his father divided the Empire between his two sons, Arcadius in the East and Honorius in the West. The tremissis, one third of a solidus, is a small gold coin characteristic of Late Antiquity. Struck at Rome, a Western mint, this example in the name of the Eastern emperor bears witness to the shared imperial college of the period; tremisses of Arcadius from the Rome mint are rare.
