Third Republic (1870-1940), 2 francs Ceres, 1871, struck at Bordeaux. Variety without legend.
Obverse: head of Ceres left, wreathed with ears of wheat, signed Oudiné. Reverse: denomination 2 FRANCS and date 1871 within a laurel and olive wreath. Mint letter K (Bordeaux) below the wreath.
Close to as-struck condition, with its velvety mint bloom. Mint State.

Note: the "without legend" variety refers to the absence of the motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ on the reverse, a feature of the Bordeaux issues of 1871 during the Paris Commune. These coins were struck in exceptional circumstances, at a time when the Paris mint was unavailable, which makes the "without legend" variant a numismatic witness to a moment of political upheaval. The mintage of 1,256,000 coins remains modest for the denomination.
