Louis XIV (1643-1715), louis d’or à l’écu, 1693, struck at Rennes.
Obverse: mature laureate head of the king right, wearing a wig. Legend LVD XIIII D G FR ET NAV REX. Reverse: crowned arms of France with three fleurs-de-lis. Legend 9 SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM 1693. Mint mark 9 (Rennes) opening the legend.
Reformation strike almost invisible. Wonderfully fresh, this example has not circulated and shows only lightly toned fields with contact marks and minute hairlines. Extremely rare, probably the only known example for this date and mint. Mint State.
Top Pop: this is the only graded example! None at NGC.
Note: 1693 was the last year of the louis d’or à l’écu, born of the reformation launched in late 1689. That same year, a new reformation imposed the louis d’or aux quatre L, and the Rennes mint was already striking the new type. This louis à l’écu of Rennes dated 1693 is thus among the very last of its type struck there.
