Directory (1795-1799), 5 centimes Dupré, large module, Year 5 (1796-1797), struck at Strasbourg.
Obverse: draped bust of Liberty left, wearing a Phrygian cap, Dupré’s signature in script below. Legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. Reverse: CINQ / CENTIMES / L’AN 5 within a closed wreath of two oak branches tied with a ribbon, the mint letter between the privy marks. Mint letter BB (Strasbourg).
Brown toning. A coin virtually unobtainable in this state of preservation. Mint State.
Top Pop: this is the only example graded by PCGS!
Note: engraved by Augustin Dupré, the 5 centimes belongs to the Republic’s first decimal coinage, born of the 1795 law that created the franc. Its profile of Liberty in the Phrygian cap has often been likened to the great figures of the Directory, Madame Tallien or Madame Récamier. Dupré signs in script, below the bust, the same Liberty that graces the décimes and 2 décimes of the period.
