Charles VI (1380-1422), écu d'or à la couronne struck at La Rochelle.
Obverse: crowned shield of France, legend KAROLVS DEI GRACIA FRANCORVM REX. Reverse: cross fleurdelisée and foliate within a quatrefoil cantoned with four small crowns, legend XPC VINCIT XPC REGNAT XPC IMPERAT.
On a broad planchet and close to as-struck condition. Mint State.
Note: the écu d'or à la couronne is one of the great gold coins of the late Middle Ages, struck under Charles VI, whose reign (1380-1422) was marked by the Hundred Years' War and the king's bouts of madness. Acquiring a gold coin more than six centuries old in such a state of preservation, on a broad and complete planchet, is exceptional: almost all known examples show the wear of medieval circulation.
