Third Republic (1870-1940), gold 50 francs Génie, 1887, struck at Paris.
Obverse: winged Genius standing right, engraving the word CONSTITUTION on a tablet set on an altar, between a fasces topped by a hand of justice and a cockerel. Legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, signatures A.B. and Dupré in exergue. Reverse: 50 / FRANCS / 1887 within an oak wreath. Legend LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ. Mint letter A (Paris) between the cornucopia and the fasces.
Only 301 struck! Small circulation marks and even wear on the high points. Light golden toning. Rare. About Uncirculated.
Note: the Genius engraving the Constitution is the one Augustin Dupré created during the Revolution, in 1793. Taken up again for the gold of the Second Republic, it returned under the Third on the 20, 50 and 100 francs. The 50 francs nonetheless remains a rarity: there are only six dates between 1878 and 1904, and several were struck in no more than a few hundred examples.
