Louis XVI (1774-1792), louis d’or aux écus accolés, 1787, struck at La Rochelle.
Obverse: bare head of the king left, signed DUVIV. on the truncation, an anchor below. Legend LUD XVI D G FR ET NAV REX. Reverse: conjoined shields of France and Navarre beneath a crown. Legend CHRS REGN VINC IMPER 1787. Mint letter H (La Rochelle) below the shields.
Wonderfully fresh, with the original lustre barely toned in the fields. Minimal handling marks. Even golden colour. Mint State.
Top Pop: this is the finest example graded by NGC!
Note: the louis aux écus accolés was born of the recoinage ordered in 1785 by the Controller-General Calonne. To stem the flight of gold abroad, the louis was lightened to about 7.65 g, against 8.16 g before, and the old coins were melted down throughout the kingdom. La Rochelle struck only 64,928 of them in 1787. This weight remained that of the louis until the end of the monarchy, and the Convention kept it unchanged for its 24 livres of 1793.
