Charles X (1824-1830), 5 francs, second type, 1830, struck at Paris.
Obverse: bare head of the king left, signed MICHAUT below, above a small script T. Legend CHARLES X ROI DE FRANCE. Reverse: 5 F either side of the crowned arms of France, within an open wreath of two laurel branches tied with a ribbon. Date 1830 below, between the privy mark and the mint letter. Mint letter A (Paris).
Wonderfully fresh, with its velvety mint surface barely touched and its original lustre almost intact. Darker toning on the reverse. Mint State.
Note: 1830 was the last year of Charles X’s reign. In July, his ordinances suspending the Charter of 1814 sparked the Three Glorious Days, the revolutionary days of 27, 28 and 29 July. The king abdicated on 2 August and went into exile, while Louis-Philippe became King of the French. The legend CHARLES X ROI DE FRANCE is thus that of the last sovereign to bear this title.
