Louis XVI (1774-1792), 12 deniers Constitution, 1792, struck at Lyon.
Obverse: bare head of the king left, legend LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANÇOIS. Reverse: lictor's fasces surmounted by a Phrygian cap, flanked by the denomination 12 D, within an oak wreath, legend LA NATION LA LOI LE ROI. Mint letter D (Lyon) below the bust on the obverse.
Perfectly centred example. Much original red remaining. An uncirculated example. Mint State.
Note: these are the first French coins to bear a revolutionary legend. The motto LA NATION LA LOI LE ROI embodies the compromise of the constitutional monarchy established by the Constitution of 1791. Struck in 1792, the very year the monarchy fell (10 August 1792), this coin is one of the last to bear witness to the French monarchy. The date 1792 carries particular historical weight.
