Obverse: bare head of Napoleon right, signed Tiolier below the neck, legend NAPOLEON EMPEREUR. Reverse: denomination 1 FRANC within a wreath of two branches tied at the base, date AN 12 in exergue, legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. Mint letter A (Paris), cockerel privy mark.
A coin as struck, in an exceptional state of preservation. Grey toning with golden highlights. A perfect coin. Mint State.

Note: Year XII corresponds to the proclamation of the Empire in May 1804. This franc is thus among the very first coins struck with the imperial title NAPOLEON EMPEREUR, while the reverse still bears the legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. This founding type, in such an exceptional state of preservation, is a true cabinet piece.
