Louis XIII (1610-1643), silver douzain pattern, 1625 struck at Paris.
Obverse: crowned shield of France bearing three fleurs-de-lis, flanked by two crowned L's. Legend LVD XIII D G FRAN ET NAV REX. Mint letter A (Paris) below the shield. Reverse: cross fleurdelisée and fourchée, cantoned with fleurs-de-lis, a pellet in the centre. Legend SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICTVM. Date 1625 at the top.
Specimen strike, dark grey toning. Very rare. Specimen.

Note: Nicolas Briot, Engraver General of the coinage under Louis XIII, was one of the pioneers of mechanised striking with the screw press in France. His patterns of the 1620s, produced outside regular production, rank among the most sought-after coins of the period.
