Joseph Napoleon (1808-1813), 4 reales de vellón 1809 struck at Madrid.
Obverse: bare head of Joseph Napoleon left, legend IOSEPH NAP DEI GRATIA. Reverse: crowned arms of Spain, legend HISPANIARUM ET IND REX, denomination 4 R, crowned mint mark M (Madrid) and assayers' initials A.I.
Close to as-struck condition, original mint lustre and velvety mint bloom clearly present. Rare in this state of preservation for this module. Mint State.

Note: Joseph Napoleon, elder brother of Napoleon, was placed by him on the throne of Spain in 1808. His reign, never truly accepted, unfolded entirely during the Peninsular War and ended in 1813 with the retreat of the French armies. His coinage is a direct witness to the short-lived Napoleonic domination of Spain.
