Second Republic (1848-1852), 5 francs Hercules 1848 struck at Paris.
Obverse: Hercules group uniting Liberty and Equality, signed DUPRE, legend LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ. Reverse: denomination 5 FRANCS and date 1848 within an oak and laurel wreath, legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, mint letter A (Paris).
Close to as-struck condition, the modelling of Hercules' torso well defined. Toning with golden highlights on the obverse covers the original mint lustre. Mint State.
Note: the Hercules group, engraved by Augustin Dupré under the Directory, was revived in 1848 for the 5 francs of the Second Republic, born of the February Revolution that overthrew Louis-Philippe. A symbol of the strength of the people uniting Liberty and Equality, this type established itself as one of the most enduring in French republican numismatics, revived as late as the 20th century.
