FRANCE - LOUIS XVI - LOUIS D'OR 1787 LIMOGES - NGC MS 64

Louis XVI (1774-1792), louis d'or aux écus accolés, 1787, struck at Limoges.

Obverse: bare head of the king left, long curly hair tied with a ribbon. Reverse: conjoined crowned shields of France and Navarre. Mint letter I below the shields.

A note on the term "adjustment marks": these are file marks deliberately left at the mint to bring the planchet to the correct weight before striking. They are not a defect in the strict sense but a feature of manufacture, common on the louis d'or of Louis XVI (and particularly on issues from secondary mints such as Limoges). Not to be confused with handling or circulation scratches.
