Louis XV (1715-1774), louis d’or au bandeau, 1744, struck at Lille.
Obverse: head of the king left, bound with a headband, long curling hair tied with a ribbon, a privy mark below. Legend LUD XV D G FR ET NAV REX. Reverse: conjoined oval shields of France and Navarre beneath a crown. Legend CHRS REGN VINC IMPER 1744. Mint letter W (Lille) below the shields.
Sharp strike, with crisp detail in the curls. Original lustre. Original adjustment marks on the obverse, across the portrait and field. Mint State.
Note: in 1744, in the midst of the War of the Austrian Succession, Louis XV took personal command of the Flanders campaign, at the gates of Lille, and captured Menin and Ypres. In August, gravely ill at Metz, he saw the whole kingdom pray for his recovery. This is the origin of his nickname “the Well-Beloved”. This Lille louis bears the king’s headband portrait in the very year he earned that name.
