Louis XIV (1643-1715), demi-louis d’or à l’écu, 1690, struck at Paris.
Obverse: mature laureate head of the king right, wearing a wig. Legend LVD XIIII D G FR ET NAV REX. Reverse: crowned arms of France with three fleurs-de-lis. Legend A SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM 1690, with a privy mark between DOMINI and BENEDICTVM. Mint letter A (Paris) opening the legend.
Without punctuation on the reverse. Perfect reformation, well centred. Minimal hairlines. Attractive golden colour. A coin extremely difficult to find in this state of preservation. Mint State.
Top Pop: this is the finest graded example!
Note: 1690 was the first year of the demi-louis d’or à l’écu, born of the reformation launched in late 1689 to finance the War of the League of Augsburg. The old half louis brought to the mints were not melted down: they were restruck with the new type and returned to circulation at a raised value. The half louis of this type is markedly scarcer than the louis.
