Louis XVIII (1814-1824), 5 francs clothed bust 1814 struck at Bordeaux.
Obverse: clothed bust of Louis XVIII left, signed TIOLIER F. below the bust, legend LOUIS XVIII ROI DE FRANCE. Reverse: crowned shield of France between an olive branch and a laurel branch, legend PIECE DE 5 FRANCS, date 1814 in exergue. Mint letter K (Bordeaux).
Dark toning on the obverse, lighter with golden highlights on the reverse. Barely touched on the high points of the relief. Mint State.
Note: this 5 francs is one of the first coins of the Restoration. After the fall of the Empire and Napoleon's first abdication in April 1814, Louis XVIII, brother of Louis XVI, came to the throne. The coin returns to the symbols of the Ancien Régime, the shield of fleurs-de-lis and the title ROI DE FRANCE, in a clean break with Napoleon's EMPIRE FRANÇAIS. The clothed bust, the inaugural type, was replaced in 1816 by the bare head.
