Louis XIV (1643-1715), 1/2 écu 1643 struck at Paris.
Obverse: childlike bust of Louis XIV right, laureate and draped, legend LVD XIIII D G FR ET NAV REX. Reverse: crowned shield of France, legend SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM and date 1643. Mint letter A (Paris) below the shield, rose privy mark specific to the Matignon workshop.
An evenly preserved example, slight wear on the high points, pleasing grey toning with golden highlights. About Uncirculated.
Note: 1643 is the year of the accession of Louis XIV, who came to the throne aged four on the death of his father Louis XIII in May. This 1/2 écu, struck in the name of LVD XIIII and bearing the childlike bust of the young king, is among the very first coins of the longest reign in French history.
