Louis XIII (1610-1643), 1/2 écu 1643 struck at Paris.
Obverse: laureate bust of Louis XIII right, draped and cuirassed in the antique style, effigy engraved by Jean Warin, legend LVDOVICVS XIII D G FR ET NAV REX. Reverse: crowned shield of France, legend SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM and date 1643. Mint letter A (Paris) below the shield, rose privy mark specific to the Matignon workshop.
An example close to as-struck condition, delicate toning with bluish highlights. Mint State.

Note: the laureate bust in the antique style, the work of the engraver Jean Warin, marks one of the high points of French Baroque coin portraiture and was struck with the screw press at the Monnaie du Moulin in Paris. 1643 is moreover the last year of the reign of Louis XIII, who died in May. This emblematic type, in such a state of preservation, is a coin of the very first order.
