Directory (1795-1799), 2 décimes Dupré type L'AN 4 struck at Paris.
Obverse: bust of the Republic left, wearing a Phrygian cap, signed DUPRE, legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. Reverse: denomination 2 DÉCIMES and L'AN 4 within an oak wreath, mint letter A (Paris).
The original red colour remains visible around the legends and devices, with pleasing brown patina covering most of the fields. Attractive strike and high relief, only a slight flat spot on the hair. Mint State.
Note: the Dupré type depicts the Republic as a woman wearing a Phrygian cap, one of the first great embodiments of Marianne, by the engraver Augustin Dupré. The denomination in décimes illustrates the decimal system introduced by the Revolution, breaking with the sols and deniers of the Ancien Régime.
