Napoleon I (1804-1814), 5 francs tête laurée 1814 struck at Marseille.
Obverse: laureate head of Napoleon right, signed Tiolier below the neck, legend NAPOLEON EMPEREUR. Reverse: denomination 5 FRANCS within a laurel wreath tied at the base, legend EMPIRE FRANÇAIS, date 1814 in exergue. Mint letters MA (Marseille).
Very rare. An example that has seen little circulation, with only light flat spots on the obverse relief, the reverse perfectly preserved. An old toning covers the original mint lustre, with golden highlights on the obverse and bluish ones on the reverse. About Uncirculated.
Top Pop: this is the only graded example!
Note: 1814 is the last year of the First Empire, marked by Napoleon's first abdication in April. With a mintage of only 16,000, the 5 francs of this year struck at Marseille is a great rarity. This end-of-reign date in such condition, as the only example graded to date, is a coin of the very first rank for the imperial series.
