Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, President of the Republic (1848-1852), 1 franc 1852 struck at Paris.
Obverse: bare head of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte left, signed BARRE below the neck, legend LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. Reverse: denomination 1 FRANC and date 1852 within an oak and laurel wreath, legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, mint letter A (Paris).
A very high grade example, the velvety mint bloom barely touched on the cheekbone, otherwise as struck. Attractive toning with iridescent highlights. Mint State.
Note: this 1852 franc is a transitional coin. Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, elected President of the Second Republic in 1848, appears on it under his own name while the reverse keeps the legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. A few months later, in December 1852, he proclaimed the Second Empire and became Napoleon III. The coin thus bears direct witness to the shift from Republic to Empire.
