Charles VIII (1483-1498), écu d'or du Dauphiné struck at Grenoble.
Obverse: quartered shield with the arms of France (fleurs-de-lis) and the Dauphiné (dolphins), surmounted by a crown, legend in the name of Charles VIII, King of the Franks. Reverse: cross fleurdelisée, cantoned, legend XPC VINCIT XPC REGNAT XPC IMPERAT.
Of a style peculiar to Grenoble, with roses as stops. Slightly off-centre but a very fresh example, rare in this state of preservation. Mint State.
Top Pop: this is the finest example graded to date!
Note: the écu bears the quartered arms of France and the Dauphiné, a province traditionally attached to the heir to the throne, the dauphin. The Grenoble striking is recognisable by its roses used as stops in the legends. Remarkable freshness for a hammered gold coin of this period.
