Napoleon I (1804-1814), gold 20 francs, laureate head, 1813, struck at Lille.
Obverse: laureate head of the Emperor left, signed DROZ F. on the truncation, with a script Tr below. Legend NAPOLEON EMPEREUR. Reverse: 20 / FRANCS within a wreath of two laurel branches tied at their base. Legend EMPIRE FRANÇAIS, date 1813 in exergue, caduceus privy mark at left. Mint letter W (Lille).
Magnificent example with attractive golden colour. Mint State.
Note: created by the law of 7 Germinal Year XI (28 March 1803), the gold 20-franc piece owes its nickname “napoléon” to the Emperor. The name stayed attached to every gold 20 francs into the twentieth century. This example was struck at Lille in 1813, in the aftermath of the disastrous Russian campaign, as the Empire raised new armies for the German campaign. In the spring of 1814, Napoleon abdicated.
