Louis-Philippe I (1830-1848), 40 francs, 1834, struck at Bayonne.
Obverse: head of Louis-Philippe left, wearing an oak wreath whose ribbon falls on the nape, signed DOMARD F. below the neck, against the rim. Legend LOUIS PHILIPPE I ROI DES FRANÇAIS. Reverse: 40 / FRANCS / 1834 within a wreath of a laurel branch and an olive branch, tied with a ribbon. Below the knot, a star, the Engraver General’s privy mark, between the Mint Master’s privy mark and the mint letter. Mint letter L (Bayonne).
Wonderfully fresh, with only minute hairlines and minimal handling marks. Attractive lustre with nascent toning. Mint State.
Note: the 40 francs was the highest gold denomination of Louis-Philippe’s reign. In 1834, the Bayonne mint struck only 12,343 of them, a tiny mintage for a circulating gold coin. Most circulated and ended up in the melting pot. A Bayonne example still this fresh is a rare find.
