Note: son of Charlemagne and his only surviving legitimate heir, Louis the Pious became emperor in 814. Pavia, the former Lombard capital taken by his father in 774, remained one of the leading mints of Carolingian Italy. This denier belongs to the second class of his coinage, struck c. 819-822 throughout the Empire to a single design: the cross and imperial title on the obverse, the mint name spelled out in full on the reverse. From 822-823, the CHRISTIANA RELIGIO temple type largely did away with mint names, making these deniers among the last to state plainly where they were struck.
