Louis the Pious (814-840), silver denier struck at Milan.
Obverse: cross pattée at the centre, surrounded by a circular legend in the emperor's name, classic Carolingian type. Reverse: MEDIOLANVM (Milan) monogram in two lines.
Variety with a pellet in the V of LVDOVVICVS. Broad planchet, centred strike, grey patina with golden highlights. Mint State.
Note: Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne and Emperor of the West from 814 to 840, struck coinage throughout his vast empire. The deniers issued at Milan, then capital of the Kingdom of Italy within the Carolingian Empire, are among the most direct testimonies of imperial authority south of the Alps. Its striking at Milan, identified by the MEDIOLANVM monogram on the reverse, gives this coin particular historical and geographical interest.
