Third Republic (1870-1940), 5 francs Hercules 1871 struck at Paris.
Obverse: Hercules group uniting Liberty and Equality, signed DUPRE, legend LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ, trident as privy mark. Reverse: denomination 5 FRANCS and date 1871 within an oak and laurel wreath, legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, mint letter A (Paris).
Grey toning with iridescent highlights, minute handling marks. Mint State.
Note: in 1871, during the Paris Commune, the Communard Zéphirin Camélinat was appointed director of the Paris Mint. The Hercules 5 francs struck under his direction bear a small trident as privy mark in place of the usual marks, which distinguishes them. These coins are among the rare monetary witnesses of the Commune, making them objects steeped in history and much sought after by collectors.
