Louis XVI (1774-1792), louis d’or aux écus accolés, 1789, struck at Lille.
Obverse: bare head of the king left, signed DUVIV. on the truncation, a star below. Legend LUD XVI D G FR ET NAV REX. Reverse: conjoined shields of France and Navarre beneath a crown. Legend CHRS REGN VINC IMPER 1789. Mint letter W (Lille) below the shields.
With its velvety mint surface almost intact, a sumptuous example that has not circulated. Adjustment marks on the reverse. Mint State.
Note: struck at Lille in 1789, the year the Estates-General met and the Bastille fell, this louis still bears the titles of the Ancien Régime: King of France and Navarre by the grace of God. They disappeared with the Constitution. On the last coins of the reign, Louis XVI became “roi des François”, before the Republic replaced his effigy with Dupré’s Genius.
