Louis-Philippe I (1830-1848), 5 francs, first Domard type, raised edge, 1831, struck at Lille.
Obverse: head of Louis-Philippe right, wearing an oak wreath tied with a ribbon, one end of which falls on the neck, signed DOMARD F. below. Legend LOUIS PHILIPPE I ROI DES FRANÇAIS. Reverse: 5 / FRANCS / 1831 within a wreath of laurel on the left and olive on the right, the date between the mint letter and the privy mark (caduceus), a star below. Mint letter W (Lille). Edge lettered in relief: DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE.
With its velvety mint surface barely touched. Matte grey toning. Mint State.
Top Pop: this is the finest graded example!
Note: in 1831, Tiolier’s bare-headed portrait of Louis-Philippe gave way to that of Joseph-François Domard, who crowned the king with an oak wreath. The first 5 francs of this new type were struck with a raised edge, before the switch to an incuse edge: this variety exists for the date 1831 alone. The type is very difficult to find in exceptional condition.
