Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, President of the Second Republic (1848-1852), gold 20 francs, 1852, struck at Paris.
Obverse: bare head of the Prince-President right, signed BARRE below, between two privy marks. Legend LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. Reverse: 20 / FRANCS / 1852 within a laurel wreath. Legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. Mint letter A (Paris) below the knot.
Full original lustre. One of the finest known examples. Mint State.
Note: this 20 francs was struck for a single year only. Issued in 1852 in the name of the Prince-President, it disappeared as soon as the Empire was proclaimed on 2 December 1852, replaced by the 20 francs bearing the legend NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR. Struck by the million and passed from hand to hand, it is only very rarely found in condition as exceptional as this.
